Effect Of Nutrition And Management Of Dairy Heifers On Resultant Cow Longevity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Longevity as defined by the Random House Dictionary is “the duration of an individual’s life”. Currently dairy cows average 2.8 calvings in a ‘lifetime (Cassell, 2005). Raising high quality heifers that will express their genetic potential for milk production and allow optimal duration in the milking herd (longevity) is a priority objective to balance the investment of 15-20% of total costs of milk production with a net return to the dairy (Lormore, 2005). In a study evaluating heifer raising costs to first calving age on eight New York dairy farms, Karzses (2005) found that feed accounted for 49% of the total costs and labor 18%. This suggests a focus on nutrition and management factors are critical with implication to survival in the milking herd. The applied dynamics of the process to attain a balance of investment return and longevity involves attention to many variables.

In this study the causes of culling in 9 industrial dairy farms in northwest of Iran between 2008 to 2013 were investigated. The impact of various factors on culling was analyzed using the GLIMIX procedure of SAS 9.2. The results showed that from 5404 dairy cows culled, voluntary and involuntary culling rate were 24.8% and 75.2 % respectively. Infertility and metabolic disorders were the most f...
متن کاملNovel Nutrition for Dairy Replacement Heifers
The goals of a dairy replacement management program are to rear heifers at a low economic and environmental cost without compromising future lactation performance. To meet these objectives, increased sophistication dairy heifer nutrition programs may be required. Research evaluating more sophisticated dairy heifer nutrition programs however does not always result in a relevant field application...

Research emphasis has been placed on heifer development strategies in recent years, comparing traditional, more intensive systems to more extensive systems using less feed and relying on compensatory gain to reach a target BW. Recent research has indicated that developing heifers to a lighter target BW at breeding (i.e., 50 to 57% of mature BW compared with 60 to 65% BW) reduced development cos...
